What's Happening...
Every day after school I hear a parent ask their child, "How was your day?" The child responds, "Fine". The parent then asks, "What did you do?" and the child responds with, "I don't know" or "Nothing". I assure you, we are not "doing nothing" in school!!!! Here is a look at some of the things we are working on. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask and please remember that you are more than welcome, at any time after school, to pop in and let your child show you some of their work.
September - in class:
Themes: All About Me, Classroom Commuity Language Arts: Home Reading > Most important homework you can do with your children. Read every day!!! Books will be coming home in October. Word Wall Words > Each week your child will bring home 5 new words. If your child is already able to read them, please make sure they can read them in random order, that they can read them quickly and without trying to sound them out. If they are able to do all these things, then please work on spelling the words, as these are words that your children should be using in their writing. Word Families > These words are in their 'Weekly Words' booklets each week. See the 'Words of the Week' link for an explanation on the importance of word families. Journal Writing> In class, we are still focusing on sounding out words independently and adding details to their writing. Students are learning to write on the lines properly, use finger spaces properly. We are also working on building confidence in writing skills, so that kids are no scared to take risks and to write. This is the reason that corrections are not made in the kids' journals. It is their authentic writing and an excellent assessment tool for me. Reading Strategies: *RETELLING: Kids are being asked to retell stories, telling the beginning, middle and end. *Visualization > learning to create mental images while reading. We will practice this by reading poems / stories and drawing what we imagine. *Predicting what may happen in a story. These are activities you can practice at home when you read. Read part of a story and predict what might happen. Before you start reading, look at the cover and the title and predict what might happen. Decoding Word Strategies: Is your child stuck on a word? Don't just tell them the word, help your child use strategies to figure it out! *Sound it out - works for many simple words (c-a-t) *Look for spelling patterns you know (c -at, sh-ell - word families) *Find little words in big words (st-and) *Chunk it - break it up into parts (re-mem-ber) *Use the pictures to help, then check the letters to make sure it makes sense *Make a guess - what would work in the context? Then check the letters to make sure it works. *Skip the word, read on, then go back and try to figure it out using the above strategies. If your child still can't figure out the word, go ahead and tell them, but only after your child has tried to figure it out on their own! Struggling a little helps them learn!
Math: Numeracy > Geometry, Addition and Subtraction (ongoing)
A Little About Me!
Two years ago, all the classes on the lower level created this eagle. Each class was a different coloured feather.
Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. The focus in a Grade One class will be on talking about how every child matters and that we celebrate our differences and should be proud of who we are.
A book for primary students about Orange Shirt Day.

Miss Sveinson's Classroom Facebook Page
I know that many parents are on Facebook and find it such an easy way to stay in touch and communicate with each other. I have created a classroom page for parents that will hopefully allow for a simple and effective means of communication and a way of sharing ideas with you.
